I love to listen to music as I write. Lately I’ve been stuck on works by Ludovico Einaudi. The calm notes help shut down the parts of my brain that remind me of all the things I need to get done, so that the part with my story can engage with my fingers and get words onto the screen. Yet sometimes, I need something with more substance and a bit raw in order to get into the mood of the story. Yes, sometimes I need to tune-in to the Octane channel on satellite radio.
I’ve assigned some characters a song because something about the beat, the tone, or the lyrics identifies with their personality or struggle. In Daughter of the South Wind, I associated “Feel Invincible” by Skillet with Tira (at the end of the book) and “In Chains” by Shaman’s Harvest with Nino. Be warned, if you go listen to them, some songs may have explicit lyrics.
Anyhow, I thought I’d share a little bit of what I use to get inspired to write. I’m curious if you have any song suggestions to associate with the characters of Daughter of the South Wind.
PS – In case you’re wondering, for the next book, Daughter of the East Wind, I’m inspired by “Ready for War” by Adelitas Way and “My Name Is Human” by Highly Suspect. Just hit the 40,000-word point, so I’m halfway done with it.
